When I was a little kid, our readers were published by a company that obviously had dealings in lots of more northern states (where there was snow). And so as the seasons would progress in the reader, there were stories in them about the kids and snow and all the fun it was. I used to try to picture in my mind's eye what that might look like while they were at school. Even thought these are obviously mostly older kids and teens, now you've given me a real image.
